What does a Catalytic Converter do?
All petrol cars from 1993 onwards were fitted with catalytic converters.
A catalytic converter is basically a filter for your car's exhaust system, which with a combination of heat and precious metals, a chemical reaction occurs allowing harmful gases to be converted in to natural ones. They are always located as near to the engine as possible to reach their optimum working temperature.
Catalytic converters are very efficient and work in conjunction with your vehicle's oxygen/lambda sensor. This monitors the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases and sends this information to the ECU engine management system. The ECU then using information sent by the lambda sensor continually adjusts the air/fuel mixture to give a clean and the most efficient combustion under its current operating conditions.
So as well as being part of your vehicle's exhaust system they are also part of the engine management system and are a vital component in the efficient running of your vehicle, which not only ensures optimum fuel efficiency but can ensure quiet running of your vehicle.
Free Exhaust & Catalytic Converter Checks
Catalytic converters are designed to last the life of your vehicle, but they can go wrong and we recommend having them checked at least annually for any problems or damage. A problem can often be with the ECU and not with the catalytic converter itself.
All our Challenger Tyres garages offer free no obligation exhaust and catalytic converter checks, and we will be able to offer you advice on any issues found as well as, if needed, providing a competitive quote for supplying and fitting a new catalytic converter to your vehicle.
