How Shock Absorbers Work

Shock absorbers do not support the weight of the vehicle. They are essentially oil pumps that dampen the oscillations in the suspension springs.

A piston is attached to the end of a piston rod and works against the hydraulic fluid in the pressure tube of the shock absorber. As the suspension moves up and down, the hydraulic fluid is forced through tiny holes inside the piston. These tiny holes let only a small volume of fluid flow through the piston. This slows it down, thereby slowing down the piston and the suspension and therefore the movement of the vehicle over uneven terrain.

The amount of resistance a shock absorber develops depends on the speed of the suspension and the volume of fluid allowed to flow through the piston. The faster the suspension moves, the more resistance the shock provides.
